In 1991, a small but dedicated group of persons, cognizant of the fact that WIDECAST's Sea Turtle Recovery Action Plan for the Netherlands Antilles would soon be published and would need to be implemented locally in Bonaire, founded the nonprofit Sea Turtle Club Bonaire, changed in 1998 to Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB), to undertake the requisite conservation tasks.

The dedicated work of this organization has profoundly changed the way in which sea turtles are viewed in Bonaire, and provided new information on their biology and status on many fronts. Meanwhile, the STCB, boasting but a small full-time staff, has matured from a relatively simple field project to a multifaceted organization skilled at high technology research applications, international fund-raising, and addressing complex sustainable development issues.

Amid much success, STCB is acutely aware that there is much yet to be done. Fundamental management questions have yet to be answered, unique opportunities for conservation and training (locally and regionally) remain unexploited, public awareness could be significantly enhanced, and a variety of active threats hold the potential to undermine conservation successes.

MISSION STATEMENT

Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire’s mission is to ensure the protection and recovery of Bonaire’s sea turtle populations throughout their range.

GOALS STATEMENT

Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) is considered a model of excellence within the Caribbean and aims to achieve its Mission through scientific study, integrated management strategies, and public awareness campaigns.  Specifically, the organization is committed to:

* Building a strong case for sea turtle conservation through applied research;
* Implementing proactive management and conservation actions to protect Bonaire's sea turtles and their environments;
* Communicate effectively to enhance awareness of sea turtle conservation issues;
* Use education, as well as training and promotion, to enhance public awareness of sea turtle conservation issues; and
* Developing strategic partnerships and networks to protect Bonaire's turtles locally and throughout their migratory ranges.
